Steam Engine Mica Mine

SOUTH FRONTENAC, ONTARIO
BACK

Picture

INFORMATION

The Steam Engine Mica Mine is located between Opinicon Lake and the Cataraqui Trail. The mine has no official name as it’s not registered with the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines of Ontario. Similar mines in the area were worked for Apatite and Mica from 1894 to 1910.

This mine site has one incline shaft that reaches unknown depths due to flooding. There is a large steam engine located near the incline shaft and is perched near the edge of a cliff. If you look down the cliff you will notice another piece of the steam engine.

The steam engine was most likely used as a water pump to drain the mine as the terrain is very swampy.
