This rail bridge belonged to the New York & Ottawa railroad and crosses the Castor River in Embrun. All that remains of the bridge is the stone/wooden supports on both sides of the river. You can see the original wooden supports through the murky water. In 1927 the derailment of a New York Central passenger train occurred near this location. Some historical photos are provided under the heading "historical photographs." One of the stone foundations has the year 1929 etched into the concrete. This date signifies when the second updated stone bridge was built. The rail line was later abandoned in 1957.
The following historical information was written and provided by catseyesap.com. “The New York & Ottawa Railroad ran from Ottawa to Cornwall, Ontario, crossing the St. Lawrence at Cornwall and connecting to the vast New York Central system at Tupper Lake, NY. It (or parts of it) was variously known as the New York& Ottawa Railroad, the Northern New York Railroad, the Northern Adirondack Railroad, the Ottawa & New York Railway and finally the New York Central's Ottawa Division. It was abandoned on February 15, 1957.” Location ID #BR0071 |
