NOTE: This Location Is Currently Being Re-Purposed as of 2019
These Ruins are part of the Groundmill Pulp Mill which were demolished in 2012. The Groundmill Pulp Mill was one of many mills located on Chaudière Island.
The stone arches lead to a large tunnel filled with water which has multiple hydro tunnels located inside. These hydro tunnels were used to power the mill. The stone arches are part of an old raised log flume canal. The raised arches lead to a dam which was used to distribute water among the different channels. The dam is no longer used today due to its crumbling infrastructure. The water that used to flow through these ruins is now diverted to a raised canal. The raised canal is in use today by Ottawa Hydro Electricity. The future of this site might be affected by the condo plans being developed on this stretch of the island. Sadly another piece of Canada's industrial history is disappearing. Location ID #BR0021 |
