The Lievre River flows from the Precambrian Shield south to the Ottawa River with its junction about 20 miles downstream of Ottawa. About three miles upstream of the mouth, is a great falls at which is located the industrial town (lumber & paper) of Buckingham. Upstream of Buckingham, the river is navigable for about 24 miles except for a small rapid at Poupore.
Between 1887 and 1895, a masonry lock was built to bypass this rapids by the Department of Public Works of Canada. The lock is 160' long by 32' wide with 8' of water over sills and a lift of 6-1/2 feet. It was operated by the Department of Public Works of Canada until 1956 when it was sold to the James MacLaren Company. It is now out of service, but mostly intact on the north bank of the river.
