These ruins belong to the Ottawa Electric Railway Company. The ruins are part of an old steam plant and power house built in 1891. Once the street cars disappeared from Ottawa in 1959 these hydro ruins were left abandoned and covered.
The concrete structures are quite monumental in their own way. Trees and vegetation grow on top of the ruins which is quite impressive. A once great operational hydro plant is now abandoned and in complete ruins. The retaining wall covered by Middle Street is leaking and crumbling away. Steel support beams have rusted through 40 feet below ground level. Water is leaking throughout entire structure. These ruins are truly spectacular and show 100 years worth of hydro engineering. Hopefully the construction of condos planned nearby will not destroy this historic site. Visit it while you can. Note that this site can easily be seen from Middle Street beside the vertical reality gym. Location ID #BR0020 |
